The engine sitting in the station is engine number 40575,
former London Midland Scottish Railway Class 2P-B 4-4-0 locomotive number 575
part of the fleet of engine based at the Hurlford railway shed (location map) of which Muirkirk was a sub-shed.
This was a class of steam locomotive designed for light passenger work, introduced in 1928
and was a post-grouping development of the Midland Railway 483 Class with modified dimensions and reduced boiler mountings. 138 were built.
This engine was built at the British Railways Derby Works, withdrawn from service on 31st July 1961 and disposed of on 30th September 1961.

Driving Wheel: 6' 9"
Boil Press: 180lb/sq in Su
Cylinders: Two 19" x 26" (inside)
Valve Gear: Stephenson (piston valves)
TE: 17,730 lb
